euphoniumist
biography
jason d. ham
Currently in his third year as a member of the United States Military Academy Band at West Point, New York, Jason has quickly established himself as one of America's most active euphonium soloists. Prior to his appointment at West Point, Jason completed his studies in Music Education and Music Performance at the University of Georgia (UGA) in Athens, Georgia, where he studied the euphonium with the late Dr. David Randolph, as well as UGA's present professor of tuba and euphonium, Mr. David Zerkel. Other teachers have included Dr. Kenneth R. Kroesche and Dr. Ronald Davis.

During his time in Athens, Jason maintained a busy schedule as a competitor on the euphonium. Among his competition victories, he was the 2001 winner of the International Tuba and Euphonium Conference (ITEC) Solo Euphonium Artist Competition, held that year in Lahti, Finland.

Now in his third year as a Yamaha Performing Artist, Jason is increasingly being recognized as a pioneer on the euphonium, having already taken the instrument to many locations that have never seen the euphonium in a solo role. In October, 2004, Jason was the first-ever euphonium player to appear as a soloist with the People's Liberation Army Band of China. A few months later, in July, 2005, Jason presented the first-ever euphonium recitals in Bulgaria and Macedonia. During these trips, Jason's performances were heard and seen on Beijing Public Television, Bulgarian National Radio, and Macedonian Public Television.

As an active member of the International Tuba and Euphonium Association (ITEA), in 2005, Jason served the host of the Northeastern Regional Tuba and Euphonium Conference, which was held at the United States Military Academy in March. During this event, he coordinated performances and clinics for some of the northeastern United States' finest tuba and euphonium performers and clinicians. Additionally, Jason is a frequent contributor to the ITEA Journal, and presently serves as a reviewer for the New Materials section of this quarterly publication.

With a love of brass banding, Jason is currently in his third year as a member of Imperial Brass, a british-style brass band located in central New Jersey, USA. From October, 2003, to May, 2005, Jason served as the President of this ensemble and is presently the Assistant Conductor and Solo Euphoniumist of this group. A strong advocate for the brass band movement in the USA, Jason is also a frequent soloist with this ensemble.

Anyone who knows Jason is aware that he is a person zealous for life and passionate about performance. Yet, as Jason will tell you, his true strength lies in his faith in Christ, and his commitment to and energy for playing comes from the realization that he is doing what he's truly been called to do. Fully aware that every day is an opportunity from above, Jason continues to enjoy every moment he gets to perform, teach, and inspire.

Jason D. Ham is a Yamaha Performing Artist, and he performs exclusively on the Yamaha YEP-842 Euphonium.
